WHEN LIFE IS THE PITS

Speaker: Fred Sigle

SUNDAY LESSON, 2/20/22

WHEN LIFE IS THE PITS
Psalm 40:1-3

King David knew what it was like to be down and out, discouraged, and in the pits.  One need only to read David’s psalms to know there were moments in his life when he was in deep despair, and rightly so.  His life was plagued with one problem after another: the pursuit by enemies, death threats, committing of sin, deceit and coverups, death of loved ones, family problems.
Psalm 40 is a song written in honor and praise of God for His deliverance during a time when David found himself in the pit of deep despair.  We don’t know the situation, but out of desperation David cried to the Lord and He lifted him from the slimy pit of mud and mire and placed his feet firmly on solid ground.
Can you empathize with David?  Most of us, if not all, know what it like to be in the pits; maybe you are there right now.  Life has been hard.  You tried to be strong through it all, and even convinced yourself that everything was okay.  But then despair, discouragement, despondency got the best of you, and you found yourself in the bottom of the pit with no strength left to get out.
Come join us Sunday as we, through the eyes of David, look up from the bottom of that dark slimy pit to see the hand of God lift us up on solid ground.
PSALM 40:1-3
I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
    out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
    and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
    a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
    and put their trust in him.
