THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS: HOPE

Speaker: Fred Sigle

SUNDAY LESSON, 11/27/22
HEART OF CHRISTMAS: HOPE
Isaiah 9:2-7 and Matthew 2:18-23
The day after Thanksgiving traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas season. (Even though Christmas trees and decorations have been on display in the stores since before Halloween.) So, this Sunday I am starting a Christmas sermon series I’ve titled: “THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS”, beginning with HOPE.
Around 700 years before Jesus was born, Isaiah prophesied His coming in the form of a child born to a virgin. It was a time of gloom and darkness for the children of Judah where everything seemed hopeless. But Isaiah told the Israelites that God was sending a child that will bring light to expel the darkness that surrounded the nation and all the earth.
Although two millenniums later the darkness of evil still abounds, Christ has come to bring us hope if only we trust Him. Paul, after quoting from the prophet Isaiah writes, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).
ISAIAH 9:2-7
The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
    a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
    and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
    you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,
    the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.
MATTHEW 2:18-23

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[a]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[b] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[c] because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[d] (which means “God with us”).
