THE EMPTY TOMB

Speaker: Fred Sigle

EASTER LESSON, 4/17/22

THE EMPTY TOMB
Mark 16:1-7 and Matthew 28:8-10

We began this Easter season by looking at the last hours of Jesus’ life beginning at the Garden of Gethsemane and leading up to His crucifixion.
Then for the last six weeks we have been studying the last words (seven phrases) that Jesus spoke while hanging on the cross leading up to His death.
On Easter Sunday we will study the events immediately after Jesus’ death that Friday afternoon, and then follow the steps of the women early that Sunday morning as they go to properly prepare the body of Jesus for burial only to discover THE EMPTY TOMB.
MARK 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.[

MATTHEW 28:8-10

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
