REVIVAL: END OF REPENTANCE (5)

SUNDAY LESSON, 7/12/20

REVIVAL: END OF TRUE REPENTANCE
Psalm 51:1-6

“Repent!”  Yes, I know that word can conjure up a lot hurt as a result of the way that some have used it as means to demean and manipulate. But true repentance is nothing to dread, but actually brings healing and renewal–REVIVAL–to one’s mind, body and soul.

King David learned this the hard way.  After his adultery with Bathsheba and the killing of her husband, David refused to acknowledge his sins and repent.  Months of cover-up and denial led to a life of misery for David.  It wasn’t until God used the prophet Nathan to help David take an honest look at himself to see the ugliness of his sinful actions, that David finally repented and confessed his sins to God.

David’s Psalm 51 reveals a beautiful picture of not only what true repentance looks like, but how repentance brings healing and renewal to one’s life.   There can be no spiritual revival without repentance.

This Sunday we will see how true repentance signals the END of certain things that brings misery to one’s life, and next Sunday we will see how true repentance signals the BEGINNING of healing and renewal.  Come join us.

Psalm 51:1-6:

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
