SUNDAY LESSON, 9/20/26
IDOLS OF THE HEART: MONEY
Matthew 6:19-21, 24 (other selected passages)
Continuing the series, IDOLS OF THE HEART, this Sunday we will be studying the idol of MONEY.
Money is that commodity that everyone has to have; our daily survival depends on it. However, when we think of idols that compete with God in one’s life, money is usually on top of that list. This is true whether we have money or don’t have money.
Idolatry is not a matter of one’s net worth, but of the heart.
When it comes to finances, it is a common misconception that only the wealthy can idolize money. Money or the lack thereof becomes an idol when it dictates our worth, steals our peace, and replaces our trust in God. That’s why Jesus warned the multitude of listeners gathering on the hillside (who were mostly poor) that “No one can serve two masters . . . You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24). Have it or don’t have it, money can replace God on the throne of our hearts.
Come join us Sunday as we study what the Bible has to say about how we as followers of God are to relate to money.
MATTHEW 6:19-21, 24
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
