DISCIPLESHIP: COST OF DISCIPLESHIP
Mark 10:17-22
Eternal life in Jesus Christ is absolutely free (Romans 6:23b), but living for Jesus is costly.
Throughout the ministry of Jesus, He spoke about the COST OF DISCIPLESHIP. On one occasion Jesus turned to the crowd of people following Him and said, “…he/she who does not give up everything he/she has cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). Jesus is saying that our love for and commitment to Him is to be unrivaled by anyone or anything–nothing is to come between us and faithfully following Him.
So, are you willing to GIVE UP everything for Jesus? Most Christians would resoundingly say, “Yes! I would give up everything for Jesus.” But what if Jesus would then say, “Okay. Go ahead and do it”?
The rich young man that we will be studying on Sunday was told to do just that. He asked Jesus, “What can I do to inherit eternal life?” And when Jesus told him to “sell EVERYTHING he had and give to the poor, and then come follow Him”, he walked away because he couldn’t “GIVE UP EVERYTHING” to be a true disciple of Christ.
Come join us Sunday as we learn what the COST OF DISCIPLESHIP means to us as Christians in the 21st century.
MARK 10:17-22
As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’”
20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
