CHRISTMAS AT THE MOVIES: A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Titus 3:3-7 (selected passages)

This Sunday will be week two of our four-part series on CHRISTMAS AT THE MOVIES.  We are taking four classic Christmas movies and gleaning from them some Biblical truths regarding the coming of Jesus to this world.   This week we will feature what is probably the most famous of all Christmas stories (apart from the actual birth of Jesus), A CHRISTMAS CAROL, written by famed English author, Charles Dickens.
The movie adaptation of Dickens’ book that we will be focusing on Sunday is a movie made for television in 1984 staring George C Scott, with the same title: A Christmas Carol.   Critics of the time widely praised this film as a “faithful, powerful and authentic adaptation” of Dickens’ famous book, calling it “one of the best versions of the story”.  (You can watch the film on Hulu or Disney.)

In Paul’s letter to the young preacher Titus, he addresses the church of Crete where Titus was ministering, reminding them of their PAST sins, their PRESENT salvation in Christ and their FUTURE hope of eternal life (Titus 3:3-7).  The three spirits that visited Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas Eve, the “Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future”, were all sent in hopes to redeem the old despicable miser.   But the One who came to earth 2,000 years ago to visit our world, is the ultimate Redeemer who came to redeem us from ourselves.
Come join us as we make comparisons of the spirits’ ultimate goal in visiting Scrooge and the Christ who came not only to live among us but to die for us.
TITUS 3:3-7
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
