DISCIPLESHIP: TAKE UP YOUR CROSS
Luke 9:23, 14:25-27
This Sunday will be third lesson in our DISCIPLESHIP series that correlates with our Small Group Bible Study. We will be studying about what it means to TAKE UP YOUR CROSS and follow Jesus.
Christians today proudly display the cross; we hang it on our walls, wear it around our necks, carry it in our pockets. The cross has become a symbol of victory, power and life, but not so in the first century. When Jesus spoke of the cross, it immediately conjured up in the minds of His hearers an instrument of defeat, weakness and death.
Jesus wanted the crowds of people who followed Him to fully understand that they CANNOT be His disciples unless they are willing to take up the cross, enduring whatever sacrifice or cost that would entail. And for many first-century disciples and beyond, that even included death.
Come join us Sunday as we delve into what taking up the cross of Christ means to the Christian in the twenty-first century.
Luke 9:23:
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Luke 14:25-27:
Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
