CHRIST’S CHOSEN: ANDREW
John 1:35-42, 6:8-9, 12:20-22

If you grew up with brothers and sisters, you have probably experienced some tense moments of sibling rivalry.  There were five of us kids in my family.  I was fourth in line; having two older sisters, an older brother and a younger brother.  There were certainly incidents of arguing and fighting, but nothing major.  And often when my older brother and I were together, I was usually introduced simply as “Freddie, Alvin’s little brother.”
Although there are no recorded arguments specifically between Peter and Andrew, the lesser known of the two was most certainly Andrew.  In fact, the apostle John in his gospel often referred to him as “Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother” (John 1:40 and 6:8). Undoubtedly, having a brother like Peter who seemed to always have to be in charge, must have been tough at times for Andrew. But there is no indication of jealousy or envy between the two.
I said last Sunday as we studied about Simon Peter that I could preach an entire series just on him but not so much with Andrew, especially since he is only mentioned a dozen times in all four gospels.  But the passages that do mention him most often have Andrew quietly serving His Lord Jesus Christ in the background.
JOHN 1:35-42

The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[a]).

JOHN 6:8-9

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

JOHN 12:20-22

Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
