A SON IS GIVEN: EVERLASTING FATHER

Speaker: Fred Sigle

SUNDAY LESSON, 12/10/23

A SON IS GIVEN: EVERLASTING FATHER
Isaiah 9:6; Luke 1:26-35 (selected passages)

This Sunday in our Christmas sermon series, A SON IS GIVEN, we will be studying the third name the Prophet Isaiah said the coming Christ child will be called: “EVERLASTING FATHER”.
Now, the name “Everlasting Father” given to Jesus Christ, is not without controversy:   Firstly, no one would even dare to call Jehovah God their “Father” for fear of repercussions from the religious leaders of the day.  In fact, the Pharisees wanted to stone Jesus to death when He referred to God as His “Father” in John 8.   Secondly, in Isaiah 9:6 the prophet doesn’t call Jehovah God “Father”, instead he calls the Christ child “Everlasting Father”.   The prophet affirms that the child that is to be born of a virgin will be both “Son” and “Father”.    How can that be?
Come join us Sunday as we learn what it means to us to have Jesus as our “EVERLASTING FATHER”.
ISAIAH 9:6
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Luke 1:26-35

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God.
