SUNDAY LESSON, 12/3/23
A SON IS GIVEN: MIGHTY GOD
Isaiah 9:6; 1 John 1:1-3 (selected passages)
Continuing our Christmas sermon series, A SON IS GIVEN, we will study the second name that the prophet Isaiah said the coming Christ child will be called: “MIGHTY GOD”.
Just think about this: Mighty God who created everything in existence throughout the universe, came to earth in the form of a tiny, helpless baby born to a poor teenage girl. In contemplating the incarnation of Christ (God becoming human), we stand baffled before an unfathomable mystery that the human mind cannot possibly comprehend. The more we reflect upon Mighty God making His debut on this earth in the form a helpless baby who depends entirely upon His mother for survival, the more amazing and mindboggling it becomes.
Why would Mighty God, the Supreme Being of the entire universe, make Himself so vulnerable? Why would the Omnipotent submit to the fragility of this fallen world? One word: “LOVE”. God became human because He “so loved the world and wanted to save us from our sins” (John 3:16-17).
ISIAAH 9:6
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
1 JOHN 3:1-3
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
