SUNDAY LESSON, 4/30/23
JOY IN THE FACE OF SUFFERING
James 1:2-6
For the next couple of Sundays, we will be taking a look at what James says about “suffering”.
No one is immune from suffering. We’ve all experienced it in one form or another, and probably multiple times with different intensities.
James, in writing about finding “joy and patience in the face of suffering,” is not making light of our times of suffering, but is trying to help us to understand that through our suffering God is at work producing amazing things. More than likely we will not see it at first, but in the midst of our suffering God is there loving us through it from beginning to end.
Come join us this Sunday as we study what James has to say about “JOY IN THE FACE OF SUFFERING” (James 1:2-6) and next week what the half-brother of Jesus has to say about “PATIENCE IN THE FACE OF SUFFERING” (James 5:7-12).
JAMES 1:2-6
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
