GOD’S AMAZING GRACE: WHY PAUL EMPHASIZED IT
1 Timothy 1:12-15 and Luke 18:9-14
(THE RECORDING WAS DELAYED, STARTING IN THE MIDDLE OF POINT ONE)

For the past two Sundays we have been looking at what God’s Grace IS and IS NOT from the writings of the apostle Paul.  Paul wrote a lot about grace, something that he as a former Pharisee knew little about and certainly never extended it to others.   However, when Saul of Tarsus met Jesus on the road to Damascus, that all changed.
This Sunday we will shift gears as we explore the reasons why Paul emphasized grace by studying a parable of Jesus about a self-righteous Pharisee who touts his accomplishments in hopes to justify himself before God and a tax-collector who depends entirely upon God’s mercy and grace.
1 TIMOTHY 1:12-15

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.

LUKE 18:9-14

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
