SUNDAY LESSON, 5/22/22
DON’T LOOK BACK!
Luke 9:57-62
I am gearing up for my Summer Sermon Series starting in June: “PREPARING FOR WAR” from Ephesians 6:10-20.
As followers of Christ, we are in battle with Satan for our souls. He will do everything in his power to cause us to turn away from Jesus and return to the world, over which the devil is ruler (John 14:30 and 2 Corinthians 4:4). So, my emphasis for the next two Sundays will be on discipleship.
The church of Jesus Christ is in trouble. Over the last two decades the church has been on a major decline, with one-time faithful followers leaving the faith. In fact, statistics reveal that over the last 20 years millions of people have quit attending church services of any kind. In our text Jesus points out that He wants people who are genuinely committed to follow Him to the end, and not those who begin to follow Him and “look back” at what they left.
Come join us Sunday as we learn from Luke’s gospel what obstacles Jesus reveals that prevent one from being a committed follower of Christ.
Luke 9:57-62
As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
