JESUS’ LAST WORDS: “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”
Mark 15:33-34
Have you ever felt forsaken by God?
Things may not be going well for you at work, and you asked God to help with the situation but nothing has changed. It could be that you prayed for a sick loved one to get well, but instead he or she died. Maybe you prayed that God will help save your marriage, but your spouse filed for divorce, anyway.
Difficult circumstances like these often lead to questioning God’s love and concern. You may even begin to wonder if God has turned His back on you. And you cry out, “God where are you? Don’t you care what’s happening to me?”
I believe most Christians, if not all, have felt forsaken by God in certain situations that didn’t turn out the way we thought they should. But Jesus’ piercing cry from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”, goes much deeper than merely God not answering our prayers the way we want.
MARK 15:33-34
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[a]
